A Letter from Eleanor

There is a quiet bench beneath the climbing roses where I often sit as evening settles over Ashcombe Cottage.

The bees move patiently from bloom to bloom, never hurried, never lingering where no nectar can be found.

Even the flowers seem content to open only when their appointed hour has arrived.

Your last letter has remained upon my desk these several days.

You wrote of leaving an empty page within your herbarium, uncertain what one day might fill it.

Since reading your words, I have found myself thinking how often we try to write tomorrow's pages before the Author has placed a single sentence upon them.

Perhaps abiding is much like tending a garden.

Not anxiously searching for the next blossom...

Not striving to force another season...

But quietly remaining near the One who already knows the story from beginning to end.

The climbing roses outside my window have reminded me that faithful branches do not concern themselves with tomorrow's flowers.

They simply remain where life is found.

With abiding affection,

Eleanor

Scripture

"Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me." — John 15:4–5

Reflection

There is a quiet temptation to believe that our spiritual lives are measured by how much we accomplish.

We hurry from one responsibility to another, hoping that faithfulness is found in constant activity.

Yet Jesus offers a different invitation.

Before He calls us to bear fruit...

He first calls us to abide.

Branches do not produce life by striving harder.

They flourish because they remain connected to the vine.

Perhaps this week the Lord is not asking us to do more.

Perhaps He is simply inviting us to remain close to Him.

To rest.

To trust.

To believe that He is faithfully working, even when nothing appears to be changing.

Abiding is never wasted.

It is where lasting fruit begins.

Consider This Week

Spend a few quiet moments asking yourself:

Where have I been striving instead of simply abiding with Christ?

Write your thoughts in your journal, preserve a favorite flower, or take a slow walk outdoors, allowing God's creation to remind you that every season unfolds according to His perfect wisdom.

A Keeper's Note

The branch does not struggle to create fruit.

It simply remains where life is found.

May we learn to do the same.
